Other publications

Leħen is-Santwarju Madonna tal-Grazzja - Ħaż-Żabbar

Leħen is-Santwarju was first published in February 1980 on the initiative of the late ex-Parish Priest of Zabbar Rev. Fr. Joseph Vella.  The magazine is published in the Maltese language by the Parish of Our Lady of Graces in Zabbar.  It includes information about the Parish's activities, articles of religious and historic interest and gives notices of births, marriages and deaths of all Zabbar residents.  The issues have progressed from an eight page leaflet into a fully fledged magazine with special issues running up to 80 pages. It is distributed by Parish helpers, door to door and is  free of charge to the residents of the Zabbar Parish. From 1980  to 2004 there were five issues in a year  but as from issue no. 115 (September 2004) only the special Feast edition is published.  It was replaced by the FLIMKIEN magazine which is intended for the whole Maltese Archdiocese.  The FLIMKIEN  also includes four centre pages dedicted to the particular Parish where it is distributed.

The Leħen is-Santwarju is a rich source of reference for those doing research on all aspects of the town of Zabbar.  A few back numbers are still available from the Museum's souvenir shop.

Iż-Żabbar

Another interesting publication which unfortunately had a very short life was Iż-Żabbar. The first issue was published in January 1975 with the stated aim of uniting the people of Zabbar.   The editor was Mr Godfrey Casha and it carried articles on current affairs, health, culture, religion, sports, history and of course news of particular interest to the community of Zabbar. The eight page leaflet sold for 2 cents and was published in the Maltese language.   The paper ran into twelve editions with the last issue being  that for March/June  1977.

Programme for the feast of Our Lady of Gracesissued annually by the two band clubs of Zabbar

Il-Programm tal-festa is the popular name for the annual publications which are issued separately by the Societa’ Filarmonica Maria Mater Gratiae and the Għaqda Madonna tal-Grazzja Banda San Mikiel to mark the occasion of the feast of Our Lady of Graces.  Both band clubs and the Parish celebrate this feast in September on the first  Sunday  following the 8 of September, a national holiday of great historical importance.  The programmes had humble beginnings when the clubs used to issue a simple programme where they gave just the timetable of  band marches, fireworks displays  and listed the new marċi  which are usually donated by their numerous supporters. Today these programmes are really first class publications running into over a hundred pages.  They are being printed in colour on glossy paper and cover all the band club’s activities of the past year and of course a programme for the coming feast.  What is more important is that they carry lengthy articles of historical interest somehow connected with the club, parish or Zabbar.  They also include photographs, past and present, from the societies’ rich archives.  Both clubs were founded in the late nineteenth century.

A high percentage of the programme pages are filled with advertisements which shows the deep rooted support that these band clubs enjoy.  These adverts also make possible the free distribution  of the costly publication to members.  These programmes have become much sought after as collector’s items by Melitensia enthusiasts who usually obtain their copy by making a free donation.

Citta’ Hompeschpublication by the Zabbar Local Council

The first Zabbar Local Council was appointed on the 1 February 1994 following the first Local Councils elections for Zabbar which took place on the 22 January 1994.  The first edition of the Citta’ Hompesch was published in May 1994.  The number of editions in a year varies but there was always at least one edition in any year.  As time went by the eight pages plain leaflet of the first edition developed into a 30 page publication in colour   printed on glossy paper.  The publication gives details of the work done by the Council and informs about future projects for the locality.  All councillors and the executive secretary write articles on their area of responsibility while other contributors provide articles on various topics such as culture, history, personalities, photography and social problems.  The publication is documenting the current developments of the people of Zabbar and their environment and I am sure that it will be appreciated by future researchers.  The publication is distributed door to door to the residents of Zabbar free of charge.

Radju Hompesch - a community radio station intended for the Zabbar area

Apart from printed matter the residents of Zabbar have another means of following events of their hometown - Radju Hompesch broadcasting on 90FM.  Mr Gordon Caruana started his commercial community station on the 3 March 2002 and named it after the last Grandmaster of the Order of St. John in Malta, Ferdinand Hompesch. Grandmaster Hompesch (1797-1805) had strong connections with Zabbar especially because he granted the locality city status under the name of Citta Hompesch.

The station transmits 24 hours a day, with repeats being broadcast during late at night and early in the morning.  The station operates from St. Mary Street in Zabbar and the transmissions also reach the neighbouring communities of Zabbar.  Besides programmes of general interest and music, the station gives full coverage to activities of the Parish, the Local Council, Bandclubs and local societies.  Another service which is much appreciated especially by home bound residents is the Mass which is broadcast live from the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces every Sunday morning.
